Ideas
1)
Setting: p. 3 - 1st sentence, a small upper bedroom in the home of Rev. Samuel Parrish, Salem, Massachusetts, in the spring of the year 1692.
The author (Arthur Miller) just comes out and writes the setting.
2) Mary Warren, Mercy, Abigail, and Betty: "What'll we do? . . . She dissolves into sobs (18-19)".
3) The author writes how the characters feel and how they say the words in parentheses before the actor says them. "I've not said a word. No one here can testify that I've said a word. Is she going to fly? (25)".
4) Parrish speaks the most for his daughter is ill, is being accused of witchcraft, and he is a reverend (so he pontificates).
Organization
Uses the tone of the characters to develop the action of the event.
The shifts show the true colors of the characters.
Language
Pages 16 & 17 shows that Putnam is angry with Mercy because she didn't stay home with Ruth.
Page 22 - When Proctor says "your ... you're twenty." This shows that Abigail is a trouble maker.
Conventions
1)
Having a larger vocabulary for dialogue choices.
The style of words / diction that the author / playwright uses.
2)
It gives the play more life.
It keeps the actors able to show their emotions.
