Monday - March 20
Learning Target - Students will introduced to Theme #4 (the passion essay). Brainstorm topics and ideas.
Classroom Activities - Introduce students to theme #4 (the passion essay) and assign 4.1 (write a personal history related to your passion). Discuss author's style and voice. Give them Steven King's introduction to "On Writing" to read and discuss.
Homework - Read "The Chaser" and begin working on a rough draft of 4.1 (due Wednesday). Students must have novels selected by Friday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate their topic and understanding of theme #4 through the introduction. Students will share their understanding of style by analyzing King's introduction to "On Writing" in class and then applying it to "The Chaser" the next day.
Tuesday - March 21
Learning Target - Students will write a personal summary of their history with their passion for essay 4.1. Students will analyze the short story "The Chaser" for style and formalism.
Classroom Activities - Work time on 4.1 (due Wednesday) and begin reading "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver.
Homework - Finish 4.1 and read "Cathedral." Students must have novels selected by Friday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate their topic and understanding of theme #4 through the introduction and by submitting essay 4.1 on Wednesday.
Learning Target - Students will submit essay 4.1 (a personal history) and begin crafting 4.2 (a best moment narrative) for their theme #4. Students will also be introduced to Hemingway's style and read his short story "The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber."
Classroom Activities - Work time on 4.2 and reading time for "Macomber."
Homework - Begin 4.2 and read "Macomber." Students must have novels selected by Friday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will analyze "Macomber" for plot, theme, character, and style.
Thursday - March 23
Learning Target - Students will continue to craft essay 4.2. (a best moment narrative) and analyze "The Short, Happy Life of Macomber" for plot, theme, character, and style.
Classroom Activities - Quiz on "Macomber" and discussion / analysis of story. Work time on 4.3 (due Friday)
Homework - Finish 4.2 (best moment). Students must have their novels selected by Friday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate their understanding of "Macomber" through a short essay response and through discussion and analysis of the story.
Friday - March 24
Learning Target - Students will submit essay 4.2 (a best moment narrative) and begin working on 4.3 (a how to related to one aspect of their passion). Students will also submit their final novels selection.
Classroom Activities - Work on 4.3 (a best moment narrative).
Homework - Finish 4.3. Students must have their novels by April 3.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they have learned about crafting an effective narrative by submitting essay 4.2 and illustrate what they have learned about writing an effective how to essay by submitting essay 4.3 on Monday.
