Monday (2.8)

When students leave my classroom, they will have read up through chapter five of The Ghost Map, having taken a quiz on Ch. 4 and 5. Students will also be given a guide for Ch. 6 "Building the Case" to be read for Tuesday.
Students will get their descriptive themes returned and be called on to analyze them and think about them more diligently in an exercise.
Finally, students will have submitted their first draft for theme #2 (rite of passage) and have read some examples.
Classroom Tasks:
Quiz on Ch. 4 and 5. Reading guide for Ch. 6. Discussion and notes on the events so far. Students will reflect and revise their theme #1, answering specific questions about their leads, their use of adjective and adverbs, the use of colors, and the overall intent of their essay.
Homework:
Read Ch. 6 and begin drafting essay 2.2 (expertise essay), which will be due on Thursday.
Evidence:
Quiz for Ch. 4 and 5. Discussion on the first half of the novel. Submission of reflection on theme #1.
Tuesday (2.9)
Learning Target:
When students leave my classroom, they have finished reading Ch. 6 "Building the Case" of The Ghost Map. Students will turn in their reading guide for it and engage in a brief discussion of it before turning to Ch. 7 "The Pump Handle," which will be due on Wednesday. Students will also reflect on crafting a narrative as it relates to their 2.1 and 2.2 drafts (rite of passage and expertise, respectively).
Classroom Tasks:
Discussion and review of Ch. 6 (noting how Snow builds his case. We will also analyze several key elements here - how most innovations aren't done in solitude by a lone genius; how the "slow-hunch" needs time to build (relate this to Snow's time in the mines of Killingworth); as well as 'serendipity' (relate this to Snow's ability to draw upon vast experiences - as a doctor, scientist, anesthesiologist, cartographer, and citizen to help solve the cholera epidemic); and how, overall, great intellectual breakthroughs actually occur - over long periods of time rather than in epiphany moments).
We will also look at several expertise examples (namely, "Apples").
Homework:
Read Ch. 7. Craft 2.2 (an expertise narrative), due on Thursday.
Evidence:
Reading guide for Ch. 6 and discussion.
