Week 2 Second Semester
January 30-Feb. 3
Monday - Jan. 31
Learning Target - Students will be able to share the key ideas from the second reading of The Dip (25-55) via discussion and short writing assignments. Students will also be able to choose one of their drafts - based on descriptive merit and potential - to develop into a second draft for Tuesday.
Classroom Activities - Quiz on the second reading (25-55) of The Dip. Discussion of the key concepts. Examine effective qualities in descriptive writing (Paret example) and brainstorm on the white board. Revision time on 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3. I will drop in via Drive and offer feedback.
Homework - Have a second draft of either 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 for tomorrow to peer edit. Read pages 59-76 for Tuesday. Final Dip test on Friday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate the main ideas from the second reading of The Dip on their quiz and short in class discussion. Students will also show their comprehension of effective descriptive writing via an in-class discussion and reading of Paret.
Tuesday- Jan. 31
Learning Target - Students will be answer the following questions in short essay responses to show their understanding of the final main points of the last reading (55-74) of The Dip. * Why is it so important to get to #1? *What is so bad about coping? *What are the three questions to ask yourself before quitting, and why are they vital? *How do you, right now, have the power to enact change?
Classroom Activities - Peer review of theme #1 and short responses to the key take away questions from the last reading.
Homework - Turn your second draft into a final draft.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate their knowledge of The Dip via their short responses and questions.
Wednesday - LINC - Feb. 1
Learning Target - Students will be able to craft an effective descriptive paper. Students will be able introduced to how to score a descriptive essay based on the NCTC rubric.
Classroom Activities - Grade two sample essays on the SMARTboard before the class. Final tune up for Theme #2, due tomorrow. Quick review of MLA format.
Homework - Final revision of theme #1. Read "The Storm"
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they mastered regarding descriptive writing (using effective key details, hitting the senses, showing rather than telling) on theme #1. Students will illustrate their comprehension of the short story "The Storm" on a short reading-check quiz on Thursday.
Thursday - Feb. 2
Learning Target - Students will be able to analyze the story "The Storm" for effective elements of plot and suspense.
Classroom Activities - Submit theme #1. Quiz and discussion on "The Storm." Read "A Lot to Learn" and discuss close reading strategies and how to analyze works. Discuss the importance of annotation.
Homework - Read "Listen to the End" and complete reader-response starters.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate that what they know of the story via a quiz and their reader response starters.
Friday - Feb. 3
Learning Target - Students will be able to illustrate the main concepts of The Dip via our final test.
Classroom Activities - Take the final test on The Dip.
Homework - Assign "The Lottery" and a short analytical paragraph on it, due Monday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they learned about The Dip on their final test and students will illustrate their analysis of "The Lottery" with a short analytical essay on it.
