Week 4 - Mid-Term
Monday (2.23)
Learning Target:
When students leave my classroom, they will have focused on three different fronts -
1. Students will see their classroom core values.
2. They will discuss the things teachers should unlearn AND the things teacher think students should unlearn as a way of focusing on how to improve LHS (possible topic #1 for their how-to essay). We will talk about the Time article on how to get schools out of the 20th century.
3. Students will examine Ch. 3 of The Element, "Beyond Imagining" and examine the importance of creativity.
Classroom Tasks:
Students will note and discuss our five core values. Next, students will analyze and discuss things teacher should unlearn and thing students should unlearn. We will then apply this to how we can improve LHS (possible topic #1 for theme #3 - how to). Finally, students will take a quiz on Ch. 3 and examine their Padlets. Students will take notes on key people and key ideas and key quotes from Ch. 3.
Third block padlet.
Fourth block padlet.
Homework:
Students will read Ch. 4 ("In the Zone") of The Element. Students will brainstorm ideas on how to survive college.
Evidence:
Students discussion of core values, Time article, and ways to improve LHS (from the teachers' points of view as well as the students'), and discussion of Ch. 3 ("Beyond Imagining").
Tuesday (2.24)
Learning Target:
When students leave my classroom, they will be introduced to topic #2 of theme 3 (how to) - how to survive college. Students will also examine key people, ideas, and quotes from Ch. 4 ("In the Zone").
Classroom Tasks:
Students will analyze difficulties of college via texts and messages from past students and the MTV special "I'm a Freshman." Students will take notes off of a Keynote for Ch. 4.
Homework:
Students will read Ch. 5 ("Finding Your Tribe") for Wednesday.
Evidence:
Discussion, notes, and, ultimately, the final The Element test.
Wednesday (2.25)
Learning Target:
When students leave my classroom, they have read Ch. 5 of The Element ("Finding Your Tribe") and analyzed it for key people, ideas, and quotes. Students will also choose either how to improve LHS or how to survive college to develop into a draft due on Monday.
Classroom Tasks:
Students will take a quiz on Ch. 5. Students will complete a guide in class and then teach the key people, concepts, and quotes to Mrs. Anton. Share documents with me via Drive.
Homework:
Students will read Ch. 6 ("What Will They Think?") for Thursday.
Evidence:
Students will teach key people, concepts, and quotes to Mrs. Anton. They will also fill her in on each of the chapters so far by group/table.
Thursday (2.26)
Learning Target:
When students leave my classroom, they have read Ch. 6 of The Element ("What Will They Think") and analyzed it for key people, ideas, and quotes. Instead of taking a quiz on Ch. 6, students will create a quiz on Ch. 6 and share it with me via Drive.
Classroom Tasks:
Students will have a guide to complete on Ch. 6. Students will also be given a blog entry on how to survive college. Students may choose one of these to address in their theme #3.
Homework:
Students won't have any homework.
Evidence:
Create a quizzes and their drafts.
Friday (2.27)
Learning Target:
When students leave for the day, they will have had a work day to complete their drafts for theme #3. They will have read several how to examples (shared with them on Drive). Students can choose to work on their rough drafts - due Monday - or read Ch. 7 ("Do You Feel Lucky?") for Monday.
Classroom Tasks:
Work time on rough draft of theme #3, brainstorm ideas, look at samples (shared on Drive or from the blog post shared yesterday) or read Ch. 7 of The Element.
Homework:
Rough draft for theme #3 due Monday as is Ch. 7 of The Element. There will be a quiz.
Evidence:
Discussion and prompts.
