Week 1 (January 25-29)
Monday
Learning Target -
Students will be aware of the expectations and policies of College Comp 1. Students will read the introduction to Stephen King's On Writing. We will analyze the importance of having a writer's toolbox and what is college level writing.
Classroom Tasks -
** brainstorm effective writing
** what does good writing look like?
** read King's piece
** end with some wrap up discussion on the King piece.
** assign 1.1 (describe your favorite place)
Homework -
** write a college level rough draft of 1.1.
** complete the take home grammar quiz.
Tuesday
Learning Target -
Students will discuss what makes effective and vivid descriptive writing. Students will see where their grammar skills lie in relation to the class. Students will share from their 1.1 and read professional examples of descriptive essays.
Classroom Tasks -
** discussion of grammar
** review again what effective writing looks like
** read professional samples
** end with some wrap up discussion on format
** assign 1.2 (describe your favorite time of year)
Homework -
** write a college level rough draft of 1.2
Wednesday
Learning Target -
Students will be introduced to the different ways one can approach descriptions. Students will analyze a Dali painting as an example. Students will share their 1.2 and discuss positive and effective elements.
Classroom Tasks -
** discussion of grammar
** focus on vivid, descriptive images
** slideshow of show vs. tell
** end with some wrap up discussion on show vs. tell
** assign 1.3 (describe of your choice)
Homework -
** write a college level rough draft of 1.3
Thursday
Learning Target -
Students will be introduced to ten different leads to use when beginning an essay.
Classroom Tasks -
** Keynote on leads
** students will have time to apply the leads to their drafts.
** share and discussion of 1.2
Homework -
** Choose either 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 to submit for theme #1.
Friday
Learning Target -
Students will have a lecture on MLA format, the writing process, grammar, and effective descriptive elements.
Classroom Tasks -
** discussion of grammar (clauses - adverb and adjective clauses)
** focus on vivid, descriptive images
** grade a sample theme in front of the class
** end with some wrap up discussion on show vs. tell
** work time on theme #1 (due Monday)
Homework -
** Theme #1.
