Check for understanding for vital knowledge: What role does luck play in finding your element? How is luck - instead of pure chance - a matter of perspective? How do mentors play a role in finding your element? Who can be mentors?

* Notes and discussion on Ch. 7-8 - specifically touching on key characters/figures; key ideas; key lines/quotes; summarize the main idea of each chapter.

* Read Ch. 9
* Complete the reading guide.

Tuesday - March 15
Check for understanding for vital knowledge: What if you don't know what your element is? How many elements does a person get? Is it ever too late to discover a new element or passion?
Learning Target -
Students will -
* be exposed to the importance of being life long learners as it relates to not just finding your element but also staying relevant in the modern world.
Classroom Tasks -
* have read ch. 9
* Do a scavenger hunt focusing on people who have found their elements at various stages of their lives.
Homework -
* Read Ch. 9 and complete scavenger hunt.
Evidence of Learning -
Students will complete an exit slip in which they answer the questions in the check for understanding of vital knowledge.
Wednesday - March 16 - LINC
Check for understanding for vital knowledge: Introduce students to theme #5 (the braided essay).
Learning Target -
Students will -
* choose a topic for their braided essay (a passion or hobby).
* Students will develop essays around that topic in the various formats
1. A personal history
2. A best moment
3. A how to related to one aspect of your passion
4. A lit review of one chapter of The Element as it relates to your specific passion or hobby.
Classroom Tasks -
* time to work on essay 1 of Theme #5.
Homework -
* read Ch. 10 (For Love or Money) of The Element and complete the TED Ed assignment on five simple steps to find your passion.
Evidence of Learning - discussion and sharing of braided essay topics.
Thursday - March 17
Check for understanding for vital knowledge: What is more important: to do what you love or to make a living? Is it really that simple?
Learning Target -
Students will analyze through discussion and notes the main ideas of Ch. 10 (For Love or Money). Students will share their reactions to the TED Ed assignment
Classroom Tasks -
* Work on the Storify assignment and read Ch. 11.
Homework -
* Finish Ch. 11.
Evidence of Learning - Students will take a quiz on Ch. 10 and 11 on Friday. Students will also illustrate the key points of "Is it too late" through the TED Ed assignment and of "For Love or Money" through the Storify assignment.
Friday - March 18
Check for understanding for vital knowledge: Why do schools actively prevent us from finding our elements? How can we revise school to help us find your true talents and passions?
Learning Target -
Students will - focus on reforming education in the final chapter of The Element.
Classroom Tasks -
* Take quiz on Ch. 10 and 11.
* Share on line review assignment with students.
Homework -
* Have the first draft of 5.1 (a personal history of your passion or hobby) due on Monday.
* Complete review assignment
* Take The Element final test part 1 on Monday.
* Take The Element final test part 2 on Tuesday.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate their knowledge of their understanding of Ch. 10 and 11 on their quiz. Students will apply some of what they learned about developing a passion in their personal history draft (due Monday) and students will illustrate the key concepts, people, and quotes on the two day final Element test on Monday and Tuesday.
