Monday - No School - Labor Day
Tuesday -
Learning Target:
When students leave the class, they will have begun writing their 111 Things draft; they will have read and reviewed the syllabus; they will understand what is college writing; and they will begin analyzing various descriptive essays for vivid use of language, details, hitting the senses, and figurative language; students will also explore and discuss what is voice and style.
Classroom Activities:
Intro to class via syllabus, themes, and readings. Assign 111 Things draft (due end of class Friday). Discuss and analyze what makes effective college level writing and what makes effective descriptive writing by looking at past student examples and select professional examples, "Big Boy" by David Sedaris. We will also analyze these for voice and style.
Homework:
111 Things essay (due Friday)
Grade "Summer" example essay using the class rubric.
Come up with a topic for theme 1.1.
Evidence of Learning:
Students will have written about and taken part in discussions about what makes effective college level writing and effective descriptive writing. Students will begin applying this to their first theme 1.1 draft. They will also try to grade a former student example of a descriptive essay using the rubric for their first theme. This will model for them how their grades will be determined and how to critically analyze an essay.
Wednesday - LINC
Learning Target:
When students leave class, they will have had time to develop more of their 111 Things draft; they will have attempted to grade a former student essay; they will continue to seek out the elements of voice and style in student and professional essays; finally students will continue to analyze what makes for an effective descriptive essay;
Classroom Activities:
Students will share their grades for the "Summer" example essay. They will also share their examples of writing containing voice and style, starting with our syllabus. Students will share their topics for theme 1.1 (favorite time of year). We will explore the writing process on how to develop their topic into a rough draft.
Homework:
111 Things essay (due Friday)
Grade a second example essay using the class rubric.
Come up with a rough draft for theme 1.1 (due Thursday)
Find three examples of voice and style from pop culture.
Evidence of Learning:
Students will again have written and taken part in discussions about what makes effective college level writing, particularly effective descriptive writing. Students will also have analyzed writing for voice and style. Students will review the writing process and begin walking through it as they develop a rough draft for theme 1.1 (favorite time of year).
Thursday -
Learning Target:
When students leave class, they will have shared at least some of their 1.1 essay; students will have shared and discussed the writing process as it relates to their essay 1.1; students will share their examples of voice and style from pop culture.
Classroom Activities:
Students again will discuss and share their scores and comments on the second student essay they have graded using the class rubric. Students will read aloud some (or all) of their essay 1.1. Students will offer feedback to their work and to a professional piece (the Norman Mailor piece on boxing) and discuss what makes it effective. Students will continue to share their examples of voice and style from pop culture. Students will begin writing a rough draft of 1.2 (favorite place).
Homework:
111 Things essay (due Friday)
Come up with a draft for theme 1.2 (favorite place)
Begin reading The Dip.

Learning Target:
When students leave class, they will have addressed these questions:
* What are the three things that make descriptive writing so effective and good?
* Why is voice and style so important?
* How does one develop their voice and style?
* What does it mean to be "best in the world"?
* When is the worst time to quit? When is the best time to quit?
Classroom Activities:
Take a quiz on The Dip, part 1.
Turn in 111 Things essay.
Turn in essay 1.2 (favorite place)
Begin writing theme 1.3 (a prized possession) - due Monday.
Homework:
Finish 1.3 over the weekend.
Read pages 25-55 of The Dip.
Evidence of Learning:
Students will complete and exit slip in which they answer each of the key questions in the learning target.
