Tuesday - Jan. 24
Learning Targets - Students will begin listing 111 Things About Them and be introduced to the elements of descriptive writing. Students will show their understanding of description through writing their first descriptive draft.
Classroom Activities - Introduction to course; syllabus; week-by-week layout; discussion of what makes "good" writing and the writing process; discussion of worst descriptive essay ever; begin writing essay 1.0 (favorite time of the year) and work on 111 Things.
Homework - Finish 1.1 and continue to work on 111 Things. Begin reading The Dip.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they have understood about descriptive writing on their essay 1.1.
Wednesday - Jan. 25 - LINC
Learning Targets - Students will develop and strengthen their descriptive writing skills.
Classroom Activities - Examine 1.1 with examples on the smart board. Describe Dali's The Persistence of Memory. Read "Big Boy" by David Sedaris. Work on 1.2 (Describe your favorite place) and work on 111 Things. Discussion of The Dip part 1.
Homework - Finish 1.2, continue to work on 111 Things. Read The Dip part 2.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they have understood about descriptive writing on their essay 1.2.
Thursday - Jan. 26
Learning Targets - Students will develop and strengthen their descriptive writing skills.
Classroom Activities - Examine 1.2 with examples on the smart board. Keynote on how to begin an essay. Read "Paret" by Norm Mailer. Work on 1.3 (Describe a prized possession) and finish work on 111 Things. Discussion of The Dip part 2.
Homework - Finish 1.3, finish work on 111 Things. Read The Dip part 3.
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they have understood about descriptive writing on their essay 1.3.
Friday - Jan. 27
Learning Targets - Students will understand these main concepts from The Dip - what 'scarcity' means, why is it actually smart to quit?, what is the worst thing we teach you in school?, and, most importantly, how to survive the Dip. Students will also continue to develop and refine their descriptive writing skills.
Classroom Activities - Discussion and application of The Dip.
Homework - Theme #1, finish The Dip, and read "The Storm."
Evidence of Learning - Students will illustrate what they have understood about descriptive writing on their final essay of theme #1. Students will illustrate their understanding of The Dip through discussion and the final test next week.
