Overview
California State Parks is renaming General Creek Campground at Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park to dukMéʔem wáťa Campground as part of a name restoration initiative in collaboration with the Washoe Tribe. The new name, dukMéʔem wáťa, translates to Wave Creek and removes historical associations with "General" Phipps, who was never a general and had a documented history of violence against Native Americans.
Pronunciation
The new name is pronounced: "duk-MAY-uhm WAH-tah."
A pronunciation guide and sound clip will be available for agents.
Timeline & Signage Updates
Signage, maps, and publications will be updated to reflect the new name.
QR codes will be available at the park for guests to access pronunciation and historical information.
New signs are expected to be installed by Memorial Day Weekend 2025.
Reservation System Changes
ReserveCalifornia will update all mentions of "General Creek Campground" to "dukMéʔem wáťa Campground.
Individual loops within the campground will also be renamed:

dukMéʔem wáťa Western Loop (Sites 126-175)
dukMéʔem wáťa Eastern Loop (Sites 33-59)
dukMéʔem wáťa Middle Loop (Sites 76-125)
Handling Guest Inquiries:
If a guest asks why the name changed, explain:
"The name change is part of a name restoration effort in partnership with the Washoe Tribe to honor their heritage."
If guests ask about the pronunciation, direct them to the QR codes on-site or the online pronunciation guide.
Signage and Map Discrepancies:
Until Memorial Day 2025, some signs and maps may still reflect "General Creek Campground."
Inform guests that the new name is already being used online and in reservation confirmations.
No Impact on Parking:
LAZ Parking does not currently have digital parking services at this site.
There are no changes to parking arrangements.
