SCRIPT: Winter School Walk Program
When booking School Tours on different days, separate confirmations must be issued for each day unless they will pay for all tours simultaneously.
Elephant Seal Tours for schools are offered January 6 through March 21, Monday through Friday mornings for grades 4 through 12.
School Group Tours allow entry for up to 20 students with 2 adult chaperones per tour. One chaperone is required for every 10 youths, 17 years or under.
There is no parking fee for school groups that arrive by school bus or individual cars.
School groups without the required number of adult chaperones will not be admitted on the school group walk.
The Booking Window for a school tour is at least 10 days prior
to the desired day.
You must ask the following questions, and record the information so that Año Nuevo has access to this information.
1. What grade are the students?
If the students are K-3rd, please inform the coordinator/teacher that Winter School Walks are reserved for 4th-12th graders only. If they wish to bring a K-3rd class, direct them to contact the park directly at ano.volcoordinator@parks.ca.gov .
Record the grade in the reservation notes (extra comments). List if there will be multiple grades coming (i.e., if the coordinator says fourth and fifth graders).

2. What is the name of the school?
List under organization. This information is important to collect and note with the reservation. It is used for data metrics, and by park staff and volunteers.
3. Main Reservation Contact: List an email, phone number, and name they can be reached at.
This information is very important. Double check that the email is correct, as it will be used for the park to contact the school two weeks before their visit.
4. Are there any students that need additional accommodation (i.e., a student with special needs)?
If a student needs to use a wheelchair or walker, please inform the coordinator that the walk takes place on loose sand. Using a wheelchair or a walker will be impossible. Any students in need of these devices will only be able to go as far as the Staging Area (the halfway point of the tour). They will not be able to see elephant seals from Staging.
5. Reinforce to the caller:
"These walks are 2.5 hours long, 3 miles round trip, and take place over a variety of terrain."
6. What town is the school from?
This information is important to collect and note with the reservation. It is used for the park staff and docent volunteers, so they are prepared before the tour.
