ODOT PLANS
Lindsey Creek to Starvation Creek
HCRH State Trail
June 11, 2020
At some point I will get a more comprehensive compilation of the ODOT / HCRHAC plans for this segment posted here, but for right now, I want to focus primarily on getting the remaining sections of the website repaired.
Below the plans are some photos of what may have been The Dalles to Sandy River Wagon Road through this area.
2014
The western portion of these plans remain the same, running along side the freeway... However, instead of following the route below, a new line has been surveyed closer to the freeway with a spur trail over to a new Hole-In-The-Wall overlook...
"...where it follows an old (unpaved) logging road or railroad bed that eventually becomes a dirt trail. This new trail construction extends 2,300 feet. The last trail portion runs along the south side of Warren Creek (Photo 5B), then it crosses the creek at a switch back near the scenic Warren Creek Falls. A bridge is proposed for crossing Warren Creek. The trail then winds back past Hole-in-the-Wall and Cabin Creek Falls (Photos 5C and 5D) and then heads toward the freeway and connects with the existing historic highway west of Starvation Creek State Park."

ODOT: 2009 Plan - Segment 5 - Lindsey Creek to Starvation Creek
From Lindsey Creek heading east, the alignment follows Interstate 84 shoulder for a short distance. Along this segment, the trail is elevated upon a low retaining wall to provide required width without excavating into a steep hillside. This raised elevation will help separate trail users from passing traffic. The trail alignment continues along the south edge of the freeway for approximately 800 feet where it follows an old (unpaved) logging road or railroad bed that eventually becomes a dirt trail. This new trail construction extends 2,300 feet. The last trail portion runs along the south side of Warren Creek (Photo 5B), then it crosses the creek at a switch back near the scenic Warren Creek Falls. A bridge is proposed for crossing Warren Creek. The trail then winds back past Hole-in-the-Wall and Cabin Creek Falls (Photos 5C and 5D) and then heads toward the freeway and connects with the existing historic highway west of Starvation Creek State Park. Some rock excavation and slope protection is required here. From this point east, trail users will be able to access the existing portions of the State Trail between Starvation Creek Trailhead and Viento State Park.
Trail Segment Highlights:
• Provides access to three currently inaccessible waterfalls (Cabin Creek, Warren Creek, and Hole-in-the-Wall Falls). Lancaster Falls would be a side attraction. The majority of this trail section is through a forested setting.
• Provides added attractions to developed Starvation Creek Trail Head.

The Dalles to Sandy River Military Road?
This might be the old wagon road, which would have necessitated the changes in the State Trail route. This is what led to the change of plans at the east end of The Mossy Road segment.
Above, an old road grade and future HCRH Trail splitting off from the Starvation Ridge / Mt. Defiance Trail.
