Clarence E. Mershon, East of the Sandy: The Columbia River Highway

Multnomah Falls Lodge, constructed in 1925, continues to serve travelers on both I-84 and the old Columbia River Highway. The lodge replaced an ice cream stand, Multnomah Hazelwood, operated by the Hazelwood Dairy.

In additions to viewing the falls, hiking one or more of the rails found here (or elsewhere in the Gorge) adds another dimension to the allure the area has for the visitor.

Two more images of this sign did not convert from the old site and are still unavailable.

The photo below is from the early 1960s and I have few clues as to its location. It originally came to my attention as one of a batch of photos mostly taken at Crown Point, but since there are no trailheads there, I doubt there was ever a sign like this here.

However, the sign does vaguely fit the 1969 trailhead description below...

"The trail... begins on the east side of Multnomah Falls Lodge and is identified by a large wood carved map of the area..."
