Mist Falls
Waterfall
Oregon State Archives: A 1940 Journey Across Oregon
MIST FALLS, 159.8 m. [West of Hwy. 730 Junction], where the water drops from a 1,200 foot escarpment were thus mentioned by Lewis and Clark: "Down from these heights frequently descend the most beautiful cascades, one of which [now Multnomah Falls] throws itself over a perpendicular rock. . . . while other smaller streams precipitate themselves from a still greater elevation, and evaporating in mist, again collect and form a second cascade before they reach the bottom of the rocks."

"This image is recreated from a hand-tinted original still in its folder, labeled "Artograph, Hand colored in oil, Kiser Studio, Portland, Oregon." Kiser was probably the best known scenic photographer of his time, and had many people working for him hand-coloring his black and white photos. Mist Falls, featured here, are located one mile west of Multnomah Falls, but are not well known as they cannot be seen from the highway. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon."

Love the photo! My grandmother lived with Fred's brother Oscar Kiser and wife at Warrendale while she taught at Columbia Beach. Started March 1901- and continued into 1902. Apparently Oscar also did photography. She married (end of that teaching career!) in 1903. Oscar died in boating accident in 1905.
