Clarence E. Mershon, East of the Sandy: The Columbia River Highway
Adjacent (east) [to the Corbett Country Market], is the Chamberlain home, completed in October, 1917, which Nancy Wilson, Chamberlain's granddaughter, operates as a bed and breakfast [2001]. In the "golden" years, when the highway was the principal arterial east and west, the Chamberlains had an auto court, cabins, a campground and a flower stand on this eleven-acre site.
In August, 1919, Chamberlain sold a parcel fronting the highway to Frank Bell. By November, 1919, Bell had completed construction of a garage and service station on the property.
Also in August, 1919, Harley Bates purchased the next lot (adjacent to Bell's property) from Chamberlain. By the end of 1919, Bates had built a home on the property, and he moved into with his family in January, 1920. In 1921, Frank Bell built a home adjacent to the garage. Both of these homes appear to be abandoned [2001].
The former Bell Garage no longer exists.
