Bonneville was named for Captain Benjamin de Bonneville, whose exploits were set forth in The Adventures of Captain Bonneville by Washington Irving.

"Looking downstream the McCord wheel is on the south side of Bradfor Island was built in 1882 and was the third to be constructed on the Columbia. Scow 2 is across for it on the Oregon shore, both by Warren long before the Bonneville Dam was started here in 1934-36."
