There are some old road grades are visible through the trees south of the freeway. These may be detour routes or other remains from the construction of I-80N.

In the map above, the colorist was a little sloppy, so follow the double black lines for the highway, not the red one!

ON THE COLUMBIA RIVER HIGHWAY IN HOOD RIVER COUNTY TWO MILES EAST OF CASCADE LOCKS.GRADED AND GRAVELED IN 1917 AND 1918Third Biennial Report of the Oregon State Highway Commission Covering the Period December 1st, 1916 to November 30th, 1918http://www.gutenberg.org/files/35344/35344-h/35344-h.htm#Fig19

I am not sure if the formation shown below is the same one we see in the photo above. It is closer to three miles east from Cascade Locks, though I am not sure exactly where they are measuring from. Of course, for a caption such as this, accuracy is not terribly important, and they might have well as written "some miles east."

It is the first such formation one encounters to the east of Cascade Locks along the river route (or any route), so I believe that I do have this photograph accurately placed.

Of course, it appears that the rock has been shaved back a bit more since 1918.

The road cuts appear to be similar to the ones seen in the Third Biennium Report.

Grades to Rule OutGoogle Earth: Imagery Date July 18, 2010

I am certain, that if the rock formation shown above is the same as the one in the OHC photo, then at least the western part of the road on this map, north of the interstate, is ruled out as lost CRH.

As for the possible grade south of the freeway and east of the rock formation, I have no idea if anything at all is there, yet. More exploration is needed.

The eastern half of the northern road, highlighted on the Lidar image below, I feel, is still a possibility.

I strongly suspect the OHC photo above was taken from a spot on the original highway buried under the I-84 fill in this image from Google Earth. I am guessing the little cut at the top of the highway in the photo may be one of the old cuts still visible next to the westbound lanes of the freeway.

Continuing on toward the surviving highway of the Weigh Station Fragment, there is another cut alongside the westbound lanes that looks very old and may be a remnant of the original CRH.

If this is a remnant of the original highway, the road would have curved up to the southeast from the end of the cut to meet with the Weigh Station Fragment.

The photo below, showing the Wind River Valley from the river route of the CRH, is probably a little closer to Wyeth and may actually be shot from the Weigh Station Fragment, but I am throwing it on this page, for now, anyway. I may move it later!
