Shellrock Trails

Scott Cook, OregonHikers.org: Trail Trace on Shellrock Mountain (2011)

Back on the Wagon Rd, I follow it west and when it peters-out, simply scamper down the talus slope to the wooded space behind the I-84 guardrail and bushwhack west. After a couple hundred yards it opens up and becomes easy walking. This space is where the refurbished HCRH will run. Then leave Shellrock and walk along the wide I-84 shoulder back to the I-84 pulloff parking. Oh...., this is in the wrong order of things, but where you park and start my loop is a pulloff along I-84 that has a metal gate in front of a dirt road that leads up thru the forest to the Shellrock powerline clearing. I think the map shows the idea. It's obvious when you are there.

I could include a heap of pix, but i won't so everyone can see for themselves. Maybe i'll chime back in when someone else posts a report.

One last thing Splinter...I'm keen to talk to ODOT's Kristen Stallman about not putting HUGE Shellrock rubble-shielding fencing along the entire refurbished HCRH here...but rather doing some additional work to enable a loop trail using the Wagon Rd. I've mentioned it to her, but I don't think she knows just what I'm talking about. Walking the entire remnant of the Wagon Rd is awesome...and when you get to the end, the scamper down the the old HCRH grade is easy and quick. Give it a go!
