Staff from Highway Region 1 joined the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and other project partners Aug. 3, 2019 to dedicate the newest segment of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

More than 200 people, including bicyclists, hikers and folks driving old-timey cars, joined in the celebration at the Wyeth Trailhead, right off Interstate 84’s exit 51. This westernmost point on the new three-mile trail segment offers a water stop, a bicycle repair station and restrooms.

On this newest paved section of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail, cyclists and hikers can travel from Wyeth State Trailhead, or Forest Service Wyeth Campground, west for about 6 miles to Viento State Park. This impressive non-motorized state trail section features several scenic overlooks and four waterfalls.

Heading east from Wyeth, visitors will pass a mile of forest before crossing a talus slope at Shellrock Mountain, where rock-fall fences offer protection from falling rocks.
