"From Horsetail Falls to Kelly Creek (sometimes called Pierce Creek) just west of Warrendale, a distance of 4.01 miles, the road is almost level. Between these points the floor of the valley widens, and it is a half mile to the foot of the cliffs, which rise abruptly to an elevation of 3,500 feet and not more than a mile away."
