"The children's first school was on the hill to the south, up at the top of that steep, old Latourell road about a mile and a quarter. Later, a new school house was built at the edge of town. It had two big schoolrooms on the first floor and on the second floor a hall used for dancing, skating, basketball and meetings."

I've been wanting to go look for the site of this old school for years and see if there is any sign of it. Looking at a lot of old maps of the Latourell Road today, I think it's off the Larch Mountain Road, down the old grade a bit. (Actually, I was just informed that it is visible from the road).

Ben Carscallen (www.BenCarscallen.com) has heard that the schoolhouse still exists as a house on the north side of the Larch Mountain Road, just west of the old Latourell Road. This, above and below, is my favorite candidate. There is an old photo of the first schoolhouse, pretty much a rough shack made from planks, that was may have been replaced at some point.

I am not sure, though. If this school continued to operate past the construction of the Latourell School, then I could see it being rebuilt, if not, that old shack is surely long gone...
