Perham Creek to Mitchell Creek #2
Route 2 / HCRH State Trail
It seems as if there may be some remnants of the old highway through here... Some of the old grade seems to remain, at least, though the pavement is gone. The 2010 trail plan seems to indicate that the trail route does follow the original Route 2 alignment for some distance, until meeting the freeway, at least, though it is not marked in yellow on the map. Realistically, looking at old maps, there is no other real place for the old highway to have been located through this area.
"Most people know Mitchell's Point as the location for the tunnel with windows, built for the historic Columbia Gorge Highway in 1915. This view, however, shows the Point from its side, approaching on the highway from the west. The tunnel is out of sight, being further around the point on its north side. A careful look at detail view 1 reveals a train passing the point on a lower level, and the road winding around the point above. This photo is part of a series of Columbia River scenes by photographer Clark Kinsey, better known for his logging photographs. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon."
