Above, a stupid bouncing, extremely rough, and quickly edited clip from March 11, 2020... I've got to get my video workstation up and running soon!
As you can see from the new map above, I am ready to make some calls on these fragments discussed below. Purple means 1872 The Dalles to Sandy River Military Road on the maps, and I've moved this over from orange (Unconfirmed/Uncertain). I believe that at the east end of the Government Cove Fragment, the 1917 / 1918 highway curved off to the north and was subsequently blasted away by the construction of the Improved US 30 Water Level Route. Somewhere in that now obliterated section of the highway, the old Wagon Road grade, used by the CRH until 1917 or 1918, diverged and, shown in purple on the map above, are the fragments we find here today.
At the west end, there is an old grade that almost connects with the Government Cove Fragment, but its character is very different than that confirmed CRH segment, and the east end is almost identical to the confirmed old Wagon Road and early CRH route we find just up the hill east of here.
The notes below are from years ago. At this point, though, I believe I understand this area enough to make some judgment calls, though at the end of the day, this is all still nothing more than fairly well educated guesses.
At the junction, there is an old track which may be a remnant of the CRH or even a fragment of the old Wyeth Road route. Or maybe not... The power lines also follow this path, so there's that old question again. Did the power lines move, or did the road move?
I suspect this is a very old road, a surviving fragment from when the route of the CRH followed the current Wyeth Road. Of course, maybe it is nothing but an access road for the utility poles... This area has been reconfigured many times since 1872.
The old track connecting the frontage road with the Wyeth road may be a remnant of the original 1914 CRH alignment.
