MilePosts

"When work began in 1913, mileposts were plotted along the entire length of the highway. Historic Mile Post 0.0 was set at the intersection of SW Washington Street and SW Broadway in downtown Portland. From there, two separate sets of markers were established: one heading east toward Hood River and The Dalles (today's Historic Columbia River Highway) and the other heading west to Astoria (the Lower Columbia River Highway)."

Restoration

The mileposts from the Sandy River to Ainsworth were placed as close as possible to the locations noted in the 1924 log.

Similarly, the ones between Highway 35 and Chenoweth Creek.

The HCRH State Trail is a bit more complicated, since it is sometime longer or shorter that the original highway and the original milepost locations may no longer exist.

There are questions of how to let people know how far they are from trailheads. Since the original mileposts began in Portland, the are not very helpful on the trail.

Another confusing thing is ODOT’s use of a numbering system that has zero at the Sandy River Bridge. This is mostly just used internally, but sometimes is used in press releases.

Too early to tell if the two inventory projects (one for the highway and one for the trail) will offer any suggestions on these issues.

Mileposts (Beaver State Roads Wiki)

Mileposts, also called mile markers, denote the distance between two termini on a highway or road. On state highways and county and local roads, the design and materials used for mile markers has changed drastically throughout the years.
