NOTE from Dave Hansen:
Mary Rush's was one of my all-time favorite casseroles. I first remember eating it at Gma Viola's (and Gpa Victor's) home. I believe MARY RUSH was one of Gma's neighbors, as Donna Champion explained. All I knew, is that it is a wonderful dish, even though the biscuits are a bit soggy on the bottom.....which some folks don't like. I did like them, though, and loved to cut them in half, and put butter on each half, with Gma's excellent strawberry jam on top. (They raised the strawberries one year, and I helped clear out the sticks and stuff before Gpa planted the strawberries.)
Anyway, when I was creating this recipe website, I was despondent that Mary Rush's was not in Mom's (Maxine's) recipe files. I asked my sisters about it, but neither knew where it was. Suz said she probably didn't have a recipe, and made it so often that she knew how to do it without instructions. She had undoubtedly learned it from her mother, Viola.
While Donna Champion was helping me proofread the recipes in late January of 2024, I asked her about it, and she said that it was a rather simple recipe, and recited what she could remember....though she did not enjoy it as much as I did. She couldn't remember the baking temperature, so asked her brother (Brian) if he knew it....and he suggested what you see above.
If anybody reading this happens to have a formal recipe for this dish, I would very much appreciate you contacting me.
