Another story is about Mom's efforts to teach others in the Tigard Ward to make chocolates that could be sold to make money for the building fund of the new Tigard Ward chapel, which was being built in the very early 1970s.
She was teaching a group of Relief Society sisters the techniques of making fine chocolates, which was quite delicate in some aspects. One of those technicalities is that chocolate making require cool temperatures, so Eva Mertlich's basement was chosen for the location for a couple reasons; She had a kitchen there, and it was cool.
One of the ladies who attended did not have a baby sitter, so she brought her kids along. However, she had trouble making the chocolates, so Mom *invited* her to leave, and not bother returning. Apparently many of the others believed it was because of her kids that Mom told her to turn in her apron. Nevertheless, whatever the cause she did not return to the classes. When Mom was finally asked about it, she said, "no, it wasn't the kids, but it was because the sister's hands were too warm, and she could not make chocolates while being so warm blooded!"
