Junior Hurling

Lismore 4-12 Tallow 1-14

It was an entertaining evening's hurling last Friday under Ballyduff's Friday Night Lights as a late flurry of Lismore scores secured their place in the semifinal of Western Junior hurling final. We hurled well particularly in the middle part of the game but were left to rue a slow start and finish.

An early Lismore goal gave notice of their intentions and they added four more points in the first quarter as we replied with points from Donnacadh Mulcahy, Brian Mc Carthy and a pointed Michael Curley free. Another point from Donnacadh reduced the margin to a goal but Lismore found the net again shortly after to double their lead. We tightened our defence though with Keith Hallahan dominating at fullback and started to hurl better and scored three unanswered points in the last eight minutes of the half through Matthew Aherne, Brian Mc Carthy and a huge Michael Curley effort to leave us only a goal down at the break.

We continued where we left off in the second half with Donnacadh and Brian winning a lot of ball up front and we reduced the margin to one through Brian Mc Carthy and a JP close range free which just whistled over the bar. Lismore's first point of the half was responded to by a Matthew Aherne point but our neighbours scored a vital goal against the run of play on forty minutes to restore their three point lead. We were still very much in the game though and a Donnacadh Mulcahy point was followed up by rasping ground stroke from the same player which gave the Lismore keeper no chance to bring us level at the three quarter mark. Mikey Curley replied to Lismore's lead point to level it again but we could never get ahead of them and they managed to keep a two or three point margin between the teams right until the end. Another great ground shot from Donnacadh was well saved near the end and that was to be our final cahnce as an injury-time goal put some gloss on the scoreline from a Lismore point of view.

Senior Hurling

Mount Sion 2-22 Tallow 1-7

We had a quiet optimism coming into this game and believed that were capable of a good performance but, as Philip Roth would say 'Anything can happen, but it usually doesn't'. It's difficult to describe what went wrong here, a quick glance at the scoreboard at any stage of the match would confirm that we were, to use a boxing term, floored early on and, apart from a brief spell around the quarter mark, shipped a lot of punishment and were never in the game. After our recent good form against Ballyduff and De La Salle our optimism going into this game wasn't delusional but Mount Sion demolished us in a manner reminiscent of Ballygunner and De La Salle in their pomp and with De La Salle gone they must now be favourites for the championship. We had been mostly spot-on with our tactics throughout the summer and had often allied that to a tigerish effort which meant that better teams found it difficult to get possession in the middle third against us. It seems that what happened on Sunday was that we had our tactics and personnel worked out and then simply didn't play. It happens in sport (it happened to a good Fourmilewater team as well on Sunday and, at a higher level, it happened to Limerick against Clare) and sometimes you just have to write it down as a bad day.

William Henley got our goal on the quarter hour and there were points from play from William Curley, Paul O Brien, Thomas Ryan and Paul Kearney with Paul Kearney getting three further points from frees.
