Barry Power Interview Part 3 :

From thinking you were finished after 08 to finishing 09 having your best year. You conceded four goals in seven championship games. Caught many balls under the crossbar. As Paul McCartney sang 'Satisfaction guaranteed????

BP:Yeah and we had a chance that year. Ballyduff beat us in a quarter final and they got every break going, Adrian Power saving a goal with his face and Seamus Hannon scoring points from impossible angles.

So you didn't play senior championship in 2010 . You went from having your best year the previous year to not playing the following year. A big disappointment to you?

BP: Definitely. I felt I had more to give but I played poorly the first couple of months of 2010 and Sully was coming through at the time. I suppose few of us get to choose how or when we depart the scene

The greatest goal scored past you?

BP:Two-Dan for Lismore in my first ever u21 game in Ballyduff. I can still hear the sound of the ball hitting the stanchion. Also Cork and the Barrs Kevin Murray (also from his left) below in the field. I knew where he was going to put it but it was so accurate and powerful I never saw it.

You missed out on a senior county appearance but played in two junior finals the same year. Left behind yee the first day. Under lights the second one . A new experience for you?

BP:Lights and shadows always take time to adjust to, I never liked them. I remember one night in Ballynoe as the ball sailed in, myself and Mark looking at each other both thinking ‘where in Gods name is that?’ The ball landed about a foot from the line, Mark just picked it up and soloed out as if nothing had happened

What was the best atmosphere you have played in or attended?Best atmosphere I played in was the Abbeyside game in Cappoquin in 09, you can’t beat Cappoquin on a summer’s championship evening with a full bank. Best I attended was the Leinster football final 1997 with a son of Tullamore in attendance

What interests have you outside GAA?Play a decent bit of golf, bit of running, books and cinema. Going to gigs as the sober one with you and Clancy is another hobby of mine

I could have been a famous singer if I had someone's voice, but failure always sounded better , let's f*ck it and make some noise" . A good metaphor ...

BP: Very true, I think our best days were when we went out and didn’t try to be perfect like Ballygunner, we just went out and expressed ourselves like Ballyduff in 08. Kevin O Sullivan had a lot to do with that attitude and mindset

How do you see hurling aesthetic of catch and drive style to the more modern possession game?

BP: I see even the likes of you are hand passing the ball now! hard to love the possession game but, a bit like endless passing in soccer or lads driving it 350 in golf, it’s lower risk if you can do it right. Excitement and drama comes from mistakes and the more professional the game gets, the less mistakes there will be

It would be remiss of me not to mention the official opening of Pairc Eamonn De Paor. The statue at the bridge, the ground itself and the game between Kilkenny and Waterford. Surely an immensely proud moment for you and your family?

BP: Very proud day, wonderfully organised, very inclusive and celebratory. The game was great, imagine we got to see three or four of the greatest ever to play in Tallow

What is your involvement now in Tallow GAA?

BP: I do some stats and analysis (i'm almost as good as Slatts!) started with Sweeney and Brendan Coleman .

You mentioned the Kilkenny game for the opening..13 of their team lined out in the subsequent All Ireland that year. A litany of stars...

Think it was one of Paul Murphy’s first Kilkenny games as well, he stood out that night and played for the rest of the year. Couldn’t have picked a better team for the occasion. If you want to rationalise or analyse Cody’s success and attitude it’s all there..,a pitch opening for a man they probably never heard of and they turn up and give it the respect of a championship game

Have you plans to be involved in Tallow GAA in the future

BP: Hard to say, I live in football country at the moment and work is very busy

Are you a fleunt Irish speaker?

BP: No and neither are my siblings. We never took on the passion that my father had for the language. One for Frazier Crane to figure out!

Your Tallow 15 that you played with?

BP: I’d pick myself anyway. You’d just about scrape in at fullback even though I had a soft spot for Slatts at no 3. Mark and Kenny in the corners, two Shane’s at wingback with Murray at centre back. Paul O B and Ringo midfield with a half forward line of Zubes Paul Murray centre forward and Paul Kearney. Slatts full with Tommy and Basher in the corners
