T

his week I spoke to James Beecher about his favourite games over the years. He came back from Dublin in 1993 after studying to become a butcher. He played senior from 94 to 06. His career was affected by two bad injuries. One was a discolated knee cap against Carrigtwohill and the was hip operation which ended his career. He ployed his trade across all lines of the defence as well as stint in the forwards. On the managerial side he was manager of both U21 hurling victories in 2002 and 2003. He last managed Tallow seniors in 2010.Two games stick out in my head when I look back to my playing days. Oddly enough bought were drawn games, maybe that tells it's own story !Both were around 2005/06. The first was against near rivals Lismore in a championship game in Cappoquin. For the most part we were terrible in the first half and were nine points behind at the break. We pulled ourselves together and came away with a share of the spoils, I suppose it nearly felt like a win after being nine adrift. The second was a challenge game against Cloyne. They had been competing for Cork senior titles at the time and you know yourself as a player you always wanted to test yourself against top opposition. I just remember it being a very good game of hurling where we more than held our own.Favourite games watched at club would be; as young fella, the 85 senior and 86 minor successes were mighty. The back to back U21 titles 2002/03 were special to be involved in as you well know. At inter county, it's hard to beat that 2004 Munster final !AGM is on Friday the 17th January at 8pm in the clubhouse.I was listening to Ray Silke speak prior to the Corofin Nemo Rangers game. The same game in which Corofin were trying to get to their third Club All Ireland Final in a row. He spoke how Corofin didn't win counties in U21, minor, u16, u14 last year. How the match TG4 were showing was going to be defined by winners and loosers but he stated that it is skillset that is more important to coach youngsters. It is more important to have youngsters still involved in later years than weighed down by winning and loosing. They might not all be playing but could be future secretaries, lottery sellers and chairman and would be vital for any vibrant club in the years to come. So developing them is surely what is needed.
