Just a reminder that the Annual General Meeting of CLG Tulach an Iarainn is on this Friday evening January 11th at 8pm in the clubhouse.

Remembering Heroes

On the passing of Frankie Walsh, it was remarked in a Sunday newspaper that it would be fit to rename a street or a bridge in Waterford city in his honour. It struck me that this should have been done long ago and now with Frankie's passing, the most visible and vital link of all to 1959 was gone. For he was the captain and the spiritual holder of the flame of Waterford hurling's glory days. It was the fact that he was so young and slight, shyly holding the Liam Mc Carthy Cup aloft with an ageing de Valera looking on in the famous photo, that made you stop and think that despite his almost schoolboy appearance, he had almost single-handedly taken on the Black and Amber twice and come out convincingly on top. If you walk around Waterford city now there is little evidence of that hurling era (and it was very much a city-led team). There is not a plaque or a monument, never mind a road or a bridge. With city council budgets tightening, a statue is very unlikely to happen but surely a renaming of a street in the city isn't too much to ask for an icon and a gentleman.
