Ballyduff 0-8 Tallow 0-6

Conditions were more reminiscent of a November evening than a May evening last Friday in Lismore as we came out the wrong side of a low-scoring and hard-fought battle with our neighbours Ballyduff. In fairness to our lads, they never stopped battling and manager Colin Cunningham introduced some new young faces but we couldn't put scores on the board when we were on top for periods in the second half and Ballyduff were just about the better team overall.

The game was slow to get going and Ballyduff were first on the scoreboard with a free after five minutes. This was equalled by a Mikey Curley point from play five minutes later with the same player adding a free on twelve minutes to give us the lead. Ballyduff were coming more into the game though and they got the next three points to build a two point lead which they maintained until half time, Mikey Curley scoring a free to keep us in touch at the break three points to five.

We started the second half well and Mikey was on hand to convert a free early in the half to reduce the deficit to a minimum. Five minutes later JP was to convert another long range free that had the sides level. Ballyduff steadied the ship though with two points of their own to restore their lead at the three quarter mark. An effort from downtown from the ageless Denis Martin was unlucky to hit the woodwork and though a Mikey Curley free briefly reduced the lead to one with fifteen to go a Ballyduff point from play was enough to see out the clock and give the village men a win in the first round.
