Munster Club Championship

Commiserations to the Waterford representatives and our county final conquerers Ballygunner who were defeated by Na Piarsigh of Limerick last Sunday. It was definitely not a game for the Eamonn de Paor school of wind assistance (you always play with the elements) as Na Piarsigh battled against the wind for the first half and crucially denied Ballygunner a goal. They then huffed and puffed for the first 10 minutes of the second half and seemed to be struggling for ideas as they declined to put the ball anywhere near Kevin Downes. At this stage Ballygunner looked pretty comfortable though in hindsight it was probably a mistake to take off their main ball winner Andy Moloney without the game being safe. Shane Dowling's two goals in succession turned the game in the Limerick team's favour and Ballygunner will be left to rue a chance to participate in the closing stages of what is turning out to be the most open All Ireland club championship in recent memory. Normally a Newtownshandrum, a Portumna or a Ballyhale loom on the horizon for any county champions thinking of making it to the big dance but they're all absent this year.
