Junior Hurling

Fourmilewater 2-17 Tallow 2-13

Our first match of the junior championship unfortunately ended in defeat on a sun-kissed Lismore pitch last Saturday evening. Both teams played better facing the strong wind with our backline excelling in the second half in particular but in the end Fourmilewater finished the stronger to record a four point victory.

It was the Nire men who started with intent as they registered the first three points of the game before a long JP puckout ran all the way through for William Curley to finish to the net. This was the cue for Kevin Henley to cause damage down the right wing as he slotted over three points in succession to give us a lead. Despite Fourmile finding some more gaps in our defence to add a handful of points, we maintained our slender lead through a point from Kevin Curley and two each from the old guard of Brian Henley and William Murphy. A costly few minutes nearing halftime saw two of the lynchpins of our full back line, Keith Hallahan and Bob Mc Carthy, depart with injuries while a route one delivery from the Ballymac men was caught and dispatched to the net to leave us a point behind entering first half injury time. However a well-worked move saw Brian Mc Carthy at the end of it to crack home a goal for Tallow and restore our lead at the half time whistle, 2-9 to 1-10

The second half saw and early goal from Fourmile and when they added a point soon after, the situation looked ominous for us. Credit to our lads though and to our backline in particular as we battled to regain a foothold around the middle and with Brian Henley and Eric Hickey leading the charge from the back we kept in touch on the scoreboard through the frees of the ageless William Murphy. Twice over the course of the half we got the defecit down to the minimum but Fourmilewater were often on hand to gain a free or a point to stretch their lead again. Still with five minutes to go there was only a point in it but Fourmile finished with three successive points to run out four-point winners.

Senior Hurling

De La Salle 4-20 Tallow 0-9

The scoreboard tells its own story here as De La Salle built a commanding early lead with three goals in the first quarter and form then on the result was never in doubt. There had been some whispers after their defeat to Fourmilewater that De La Salle were not the force they once were but they showed no sign of any declining standards as they played with an level of intensity, pace and power that we could not match.

Thomas Ryan got us off to a good start with a typically well taken point from play before De La Salle hit 2-2 without reply to take control. Kieran Geary got our second point but that was the cue for De La Salle to score 1-3 in the next five minutes to open up an ominous lead. From there until halftime points from two Rob O Sullivan frees and one from Kieran Geary were more than cancelled out by six more De La Salle points to leave them very much in control at the break 3-11 to 0-5.

The second half was, understandably, a quieter affair as De La Salle did enough to slowly extend their lead and any faint hopes of a recovery for us were snuffed out by De La Salle's fourth goal midway through the second half.

On a positive note, it was great to see Paul Kearney make his second appearance of the championship as he continues to recover from knee surgery. Our next match is fixed for Sunday 24th June against Mount Sion
