Comhbhron

On behalf of Tallow GAA club we extend our deepest sympathies to the O Brien family of Killeagh, Co Cork on the sad passing of Donal O Brien. Ar dheis lamh De go raibh a anam uasail.

Good Luck

With the National Hurling League up and running, we extend our best wishes to our count panellists Thomas Ryan, Mark O Brien and Aidan Kearney and wish them all a prosperous and injury-free year with Waterford.

The start of the National League marks the first time in almost 10 years that a Waterford panel is assembling without James Murray in situ. With typical self-effacement he bowed out of the intercounty scene during the winter with a haul of four Munster medals and one National League medal. He also won a Harty Cup medal with St Colman’s College, Fitzgibbon Cup medals with UCC and represented Waterford at minor and U21 levels. As well as these, he represented Munster at Railway Cup level. He was a source of inspiration to all in Tallow throughout the recent successful years of Waterford hurling, becoming the first Tallow man since Dermie Henley to play senior intercounty championship hurling and paving the way for others like the O Brien brothers, Aidan Kearney, Brian Henley and Thomas Ryan to represent the county. One memory that stands out for me is the 2002 Munster semifinal against Cork where James lined up at corner back facing the great Joe Deane of Cork. After being beaten for the first couple of balls by Deane (mainly due to the signature Cork puckout strategy of hitting it to a vacated wing forward position for the corner forward to have the freedom of Thurles to run onto), he showed fortitude and resilience to regain his influence on the game. By the second half and latter stages of the game he was faster, higher and stronger than any Corkman that came upon his patch.

It is of course highly inaccurate to conjure up an image of him retiring with his feet up given work, a recently born son and a Tallow club team to focus on. We look forward to his leadership and ability in a Tallow jersey for a good few years to come.
