Comhbhron

On behalf of Tallow GAA Club we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of our club vice-president Mary (Babs) Mulcahy of Ballinaha, Tallow Co Waterford on her recent passing. Ar dheis De go raibh a hAnam

Babs was a quintessential Tallow woman, full of spirit, bravery and fun. If I ever met her at the height of the hurling season, I'd never need to tell her what stage Tallow were at or where the next match was on; she would know everything and after a bit of hurling talk she would finish with a flourish and a prediction- 'Tallow will bate them'. She and her sister Frances were regulars at Tallow and Waterford games and they were the coolest people in the stands or on the line- they had seen it all before.

Married life took her into Shamrocks GAA territory (her late husband Mick hurled for the Shamrocks for many years) but she good-naturedly and stoutly flew the flag for Tallow throughout her years and it is a sign of the woman she was that she was equally popular in both clubs and will be missed by many.

When my father and I talked to her not long after the tragic and untimely passing of her only daughter Mary, she was naturally broken-hearted but was determined to stay strong. 'I'll keep on going, she said, 'hurling and religion will keep me going'.

Senior Hurling

Dates for your diary for the senior hurling championship are Sunday May 6th Tallow v Dunhill in Fraher Field at 7:30pm and Saturday May 12th Tallow v Roanmore in Fraher Field at 7 30pm. Tallow v De La Salle is provisionally fixed for the weekend of May 25th but this has not been confirmed yet.

Back Door Blues

Interesting to see that a motion to allow defeated Munster and Leinster u21 finalists to re-enterthe u21 cahmpionship was defeated at Congress last weekend. To me, it makes more sense in terms of player development to have a back door in the u21 championship. Players in the 18-21 age bracket get a lot of games through colleges hurling in the winter months but for a 20 year old on the fringes of the senior panel (who is allowed to play very few club senior games), the months of June and July can bring precious few games. The progress of Cork, Clare, Limerick and Dublin this year reinforces the view that the u21 championship is a much firmer predictor of senior success than the minor grade and extra games at a higher level of summer hurling would allow more progress. The obvious consequence for club fixtures would be allayed by scrapping the minor championship back door.
