Annual General Meeting

The AGM of CLG Tulach an Iarainn took place last Saturday evening in the GAA Clubhouse and was well attended . It was an eventful and busy year for our club which was reflected in the chairman's and treasurer's reports.

Runai Lindsay Murphy read the minutes from last year's AGM which were accepted by the committee and this was followed by a detailed and excellent report on the club's finances by Treasurer Mairead Sheehan. She reported that the club's finances were in a relatively healthy position due to increased income from Lotto receipts and the new pitch opening but urged that caution should be the watchword going forward as these increased income streams were unlikely to be repeated. Both our runai and treasurer reported that there were 154 paid-up members of the club in 2011 which was a decrease on 2010 and also that there were 10 players from the junior and senior panels who had not paid their membership, a situation that is most unacceptable. Our treasurer expressed her thanks to John Murray for his work on repairing hurleys at no cost to the club.

Timmy Sheehan gave a report on the year's Lotto and expressed a cautious satisfaction that the Lotto was in a decent financial position although he warned that this situation was due to the jackpot having not been won for a long time and having been rolled over several times this year and that it currently stands just short of an eye-watering €20000. It is clear from the figures he gave that it constitutes the main source of income for the club and he thanked all promoters, sellers and volunteers for their work.

David O Brien reported on the Deise Draw activities for the year and while numbers taking tickets were down 8 or 9 from last year, he reported that more players had bought tickets in 2011 than in 2010 which was a welcome development. The Deise Draw is second only to the club Lotto in its contribution to the funding of the club and the chairman thanked both David and Kate Ryan for their work.

In his chairman's address, Denis Tobin reflected on a very busy year for the club. He stated that the start of the year was challenging with repairs to be done to the clubhouse and the search for a senior hurling management team. He reflected on a successful opening of Pairc Eamonn de Paor and unveiling of the Ned Power statue which he pronounced a success both financially and organisationally and he thanked the organising subcommittee of John Mc Donnell, Lindsay Murphy, Liam Mulcahy and John Murray for their work. He also expressed gratitude to the Gardai, stewards and volunteers for their help in making the day a success. He remarked that twelve of the Kilkenny team who played in our field started the All Ireland final and that Brian Cody had commented on the quality of the new pitch.

Turning to playing matters he remarked upon a good year overall for the club with county finals reached in two adult grades. Our u21 hurlers beat Clashmore before going down to eventual county champions St Carthages while our u21 footballers beat the Brickeys before losing to Kilrossanty. He expressed disappointment in a difficult year for our intermediate footballers which ended in relegation. On the senior hurling front he stated that the highlights of the year were the victories over Ballyduff and Lismore and, while the county final was just not our day, he expressed the hope that we could go one better in 2012 and wished Mick Mangan and his players every luck and success. He also thanked Colin Cunningham for his skilful handling of the junior hurling team which also reached a county final, only beaten after a replay. Thanks were also expressed to Neil Moore for his contribution to Cois Bride.

Denis expressed sympathy to all club members affected by bereavement in 2011 and passed on his congratulations to club President Eddie Cunningham on receiving a Munster Council award for services to refereeing. He expressed his thanks to our club sponsors and supporters and thanked Timmy and Billy Jean Sheehan for their work with the jerseys, Paul Weller and Kate Ryan for the Deise Draw, the Lotto Committee, Martin Murphy for the maintenance of the field and his right-hand women Mairead Sheehan and Lindsay Murphy.

The election of officers proved uneventful, with the same executive continuing for 2012. Both Babs Mulcahy and Denny Cunningham were proposed and seconded as vice presidents. Our chairman announced that there would be some changes to the senior hurling selectors and that the junior hurling management would remain the same.

There followed a wide-ranging discussion on club matters before the meeting was brought to a close with best wishes from the chairman to all in CLG Tulach an Iariann for 2012.

Best Wishes

Best wishes to Cois Bride player Dylan Mangan, recently home from hospital.
