U13 Footballers

U13 Western Football Winners 2009

Structures at under age level, particularly from the 1960’s have always been strong with particular emphasis on coaching skills. The coaching work of Eamonn De Paor paid huge dividends throughout the 60’s and 70’s with Tallow teams bringing home Western and County medals by the sack full.

Tallow U14 squad 1971. They won the Hurling and Football double. 7 of this squad went on to play senior hurling for Waterford. Pat Daly, Stephen Curley, Connie Curley, Kieran Ryan, Mickey Curley, Ray O'Brien (RIP), Timmy Sheehan.

A full list of underage titles garnered can be viewed on the Roll of Honour.

Changing social times resulting in smaller families led to a decline in numbers in many small rural clubs and Tallow was no different. In 2001 our juvenile section amalgamated with neighbours, The Shamrocks, to form Cois Bhride.

Cois Bhride caters for approximately 180 playing members from age 5 to 18, drawn from a catchment area which stretches from Tallow Bridge to the borders of Cork near Youghal Bridge.

All Ireland Feile Skills Champion 2003 – Thomas Ryan

All Ireland titles are a rare enough commodity in Waterford and are therefore valued all the more highly. In June 2003 Thomas Ryan represented Waterford in the All Ireland Feile Skills final in Mullingar. Ned Power, who coached Thomas in the skills of the game in preparation for the finals, recounts that memorable success as follows:

“Thomas’s greatest achievement so far in a glittering hurling career must be his masterful display at the ALL-Ireland Feile na Gael Skills competition on the 13th June in Mullingar. There were bigger and stronger competitors from every county in Ireland. Thomas eclipsed them all by a comfortable margin with an almost flawless display of skill, scoring 53 out of a possible maximum of 56. He won for Waterford and himself the distinction of being the most skilful young hurler in Ireland.”

Ned of course played a huge part in Thomas’s success having coached him from a young age. Ned recalls:

“He was a joy to coach because he was so receptive and responsive, absorbing every little detail of skill and craft. His dedication to practice is no secret. He has shed lustre on Tallow and I feel certain that his burgeoning talent has yet to reach its full flowering. What an exciting prospect! Nár lagai Dia a lámh!”

Great credit is also due to Tommy’s sister Rachael who was a teacher in Scoil Mhuire during this period and for many years was the main driving force in under age hurling in Tallow.
