Junior Hurling Championship Western Final

Tallow 2-11 Ballyduff 1-12

In a tense and physical battle in Cappoquin we saw off the challenge of Ballyduff to claim our first Western junior title in many years. Ballyduff and ourselves had met twice already this year with their ability to get goals resulting in them winning both matches though there was little more than a puck of a ball between us.

We faced the wind in the first half and kept it tight, early points from frees and play from JP Grey and one from Rob O Sullivan answering Ballyduff's early points. With the score five points to three in favour of Ballyduff a long delivery from JP was flicked to the net by Stuart Barry to give us the lead. This was added to by a William Murphy point before Ballyduff got through for a goal and they added two more points to give them a halftime lead of three points 1-7 to 1-4.

We made a good start to the second half with a glorious long range point from Michael Curley to narrow the gap. Ballyduff responded with a point of their own only to be answered by a great point from JP who had bravely reappeared after treatment on a serious finger injury. Even against the wind there was no lying down from Ballyduff and they put over a few points of their own to keep themselves in the driving seat. The decisive score came midway through the second half when a long ball from Billy Sheehan ended in the Ballyduff net to give us a lead for the first time since early in the first half. Back came Ballyduff again though to equalise but our fullback line held firm before points from William Murphy and Rob O Sullivan sealed the game for us and the grace note was added by a magnificent catch from Billy Sheehan in his own penalty area just before the final whistle.

Team: B Power, S Pratt, K O Hallahan, E Hickey, K Fraser, B Sheehan, T Daly, M Curley, W Murphy, R O Sullivan, L Mc Carthy, B Mc Carthy, JP Grey, S Barry, K Henley. Subs J Power for JP Grey, S Mc Carthy for K Henley

This victory is the culmination of four years of work by manager Colin Cunningham (and earlier by Liam Mulcahy) and it is a tribute to his vision, organisational skills and dedication that we made a breakthrough this year. Thanks too to the backroom team of Patsy Cunningham, Finn Mc Carthy and kitman Myles Tobin. For the elderly of our panel it is also a reward for many years of service at junior and senior level. We look forward to the county final against Mount Sion which will be played in the next few weeks, details to follow as soon as we have them.

Senior Hurling

We play Lismore this Saturday September 17th at Fraher Field at 4pm in an eagerly anticipated county quarter final. While we have met in the group stages a number of times in the last few years I think I'm right in saying that the two clubs have only met twice at the business end of the championship in recent memory. It's our first meeting at the knockout stage since 2004 when Dan Shanahan's two goals beat us at a rain sodden Fraher Field. Before that, in 1993, Lismore were again the victors when the two teams met in an epic county semi final in Cappoquin that resulted in a draw and replay. This game was notable for the Legend scoring two goals despite the considerable handicap of having only one functioning hand thanks to a training ground injury inflicted by Oscar's father!

Lismore will obviously be favourites for this game having come through a tough group featuring De La Salle, Fourmilewater and Ballyduff but we will look to our senior players and our defence to show what a local derby means to them and compete ferociously. It would be great to see a huge Tallow support and we appeal to all to turn up and shout on our lads.
