All Ireland Final

In one year the landscape of hurling has changed and the somewhat unlikely architect of all this is one Davy Fitzgerald. A man who once sent out Waterford players to kick and scratch Kilkenny men in the laughable belief that they could be softened up now has presided over a game of pace and movement that has thrilled and enlightened. Al Pacino once said you can get further with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word and that was the prevailing philosophy in hurling until this year.

For two years in a row we watched Clare beat Waterford in Munster minor finals with Kelly and Galvin at midfield and especially in 2011 they were both breathtaking. They had left and right and could move and jink and weave and they left good Waterford opponents grasping at air. I think Podge Collins was on one of the teams as well as I remember thinking they're great but at their size they could be killed in senior hurling. The nagging feeling was always there- what would Jackie Tyrell and Brian Hogan do to them if they tried the same style of hurling at senior level? With the great Kilkenny defence winding down (though far from gone) that question may never be answered but the two All Ireland finals showed beyond any doubt that Clare's pace and movement is too much for most midfields and defences. Immense credit must go to the minor management team who picked Galvin and Kelly at midfield for the two years. In some counties they would have been shunted into corner forward (the idea being that, with an eye to senior level, it would be better to develop a big lad to compete with the Tanniens and Fennellys of this world)
