Junior Hurling

Lismore 3-15 Tallow 1-12

Our defence of our Western Junior hurling crown ended in defeat in Ballyduff on Saturday evening as Lismore got ahead early and maintained their lead through well-timed goals and proved a little too good for a spirited Tallow team. There was hope after the match that we were still in the championship but it now turns out that, strangely enough given that Dungarvan awarded us a walkover, scoring average has decided that we finish fourth in the group.

Lismore started the half with wind advantage and had four points on the board before we opened our account with a long range free from JP Grey, followed by a superb point from the ageless Brian Henley. Lismore added another point before Luke Mc Carthy slotted over another point to reduce the deficit. We were coming into the game now and another free from the accurate JP got us closer. Lismore kicked on again with three more points and a vital goal just before halftime. A second point from Luke Mc Carthy added to our tally to leave the halftime score Lismore 1-9 to Tallow's 0-5.

With the wind at our backs we began to play better around the middle and won three frees in a row, two converted expertly by JP and the other by William Murphy, to narrow the gap to four. We were well in the game at this stage and both teams exchanged points to leave the gap at four. However a superb goal against the run of play for Lismore gave them a vital edge and two more points let them maintain their lead as Will Murphy and JP kept our hopes alive with their accuracy from frees. We were given a glimmer of hope five minutes from time when JP ruthlessly dispatched a penalty to the Lismore net but Lismore had the final flourish as they got a goal of thier own to leave the final score Lismore 3-15 Tallow 1-12

Team: JP Grey (1-5) K Hallahan, E Hickey, D Martin, N Condon, T Mc Grath, B Henley (0-1), M Curley, W Murphy (0-4), S Tobin, K Henley, M Ahern, L Mc Carthy (0-2), W Curley. Subs W Mc Donnell for D Martin, J Power for M Curley.

A sincere thanks to our manager Colin Cunningham for all his efforts during the year and to selectors Finn and Patsy along with kitman Myles Tobin and Thomas Ryan for his help with preparation.

Senior Hurling

We play Fourmilewater in our final group game of the senior hurling championship next Sunday 2nd September in Fraher Field at 3:30. A win here guarantees us a place in the quarter final. If we lose, we are dependent on Roanmore not getting anything from their game against Mount Sion. We would appreciate as much support as possible.
