Five Things We Learned This Weekend

1 High on Emotion

The Cork crowd expected on Saturday night and that expectation filtered through to the players. There were returning heroes on and off the field who people wanted to play for and play with. Given the heightened drama, it would have taken a seriously focused and committed performance from Waterford to halt them.

2 Wing Backs are Not Corner Backs

The space afforded to the Cork attack especially down the flanks was alarming as the first half progressed. Wing backs can sometimes tend to play too much from behind and allow their man to have the ball when they first transfer to the corner and that is what happened to allow Cork back into the game in the first half

3 An Easy Star

The talk after Saturday night's game will naturally be about Conor Lehane. The spectacular piece of control in the first half and the gravity-defying hangtime of his second-half catch were highly impressive. It's unlikely though that he will get as much room in general play for the rest of the league as he did in the first fifty minutes so next Sunday against Dublin will be interesting.

4More of the Same

It's hard to believe the aerial ability and all-round game of TJ Reid hasn't cemented him an automatic place in the Kilkenny forward line by now and it's clear Brian Cody just doesn't trust him in the same way he does Henry, Richie Power and Eoin Larkin. However with Eddie Brennan departing the stage, there is a clear oppurtunity for another forward place and he will have done himself no harm against Tipperary.

5 Fired Up

For Clare to beat Limerick was not neccessarily a surprise. For Clare to get medieval with Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds was a major turn-up for the books. One can only imagine the former Waterford manager gently cajoling and quietly inspiring his troops at half-time and full-time.

Deise Draw

The Deise Draw is one of our major sources of funding for the week-to-week running of the club and investment in the long-term future of the club. Last year it was a close second to the Lotto in terms of overall funds raised and we thank all supporters and members for their continued support.

It's coming close to the time of year again when co-ordinators David O Brien and Kate Ryan will be cajoling and persuading us all to buy tickets and I would appeal for the response to be positive. If times are tight, maybe you could think about sharing the cost of a ticket with a friend. The prizes are great and the chances of winning are realistic as many club members and friends have discovered.
