Senior Hurling

Mount Sion 2-15 Tallow 0-15

Our hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the senior hurling championship suffered a blow as Mount Sion produced a strong finishing burst to edge past us and get their season back on track. We weren't helped by being without two of our first choice defence yet we battled well for most of the match, Mount Sion's two first half goals ultimately proving the difference between the sides.

We played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half but it was the city team who got on the scoresheet first with a pointed free. Thomas Ryan responded swiftly with a superb point from play to level matters and that seemed to settle us with points from Kieran Geary, Paul O Brien and a Rob O Sullivan free leaving us four points to two ahead after five minutes. Another Rob O Sullivan free was added to by a Kevin O Brien point to push us four points clear. Mount Sion then struck for a goal from close range and added a point of their own to level the match halfway through the first half. A mix-up in our defence soon after this led to another Sion goal on twenty minutes but we responded well to score the last four points of the first half to edge back in front at the break 0-10 to Mount Sion's 2-3.

It was bound to be a tough task to face a classic Fraher Field wind in the second half but an early Paul Kearney point settled us down and put us two points ahead and we dug in to keep that lead for the first ten minutes of the second half with points from Evan Sheehan and a Rob O Sullivan free canceleing out two Mount Sion points. Our defence was giving nothing away with Fada, Mark and Ken Kearney being to the fore in resisting any Sion attempts to overwhelm us.

However their midfield was gradually winning more ball and our old habit of conceding frees was beginning to creep in and by the three quarter hour mark they had added two more pointed frees to draw level. They added three more frees in the next five minutes in response to a single Rob O Sullivan free and though an Evan Sheehan free with eight minutes to go got us back to within a point that would be as close as we would get. We had a chance of a goal after a during a goalmouth scramble with injury time approaching but the city club cleared their lines and confidently added three more points in injury time to leave no doubt about the outcome.

Team: S O Sullivan, K Fraser, D O Brien, K Kearney, M O Brien, J Murray, K Curley, K O Brien, P O Brien, P Kearney, K Geary, R O Sullivan, A Pratt, S Mc Carthy, T Ryan. Subs E Sheehan for K Fraser, S Feeney for R O Sullivan, L White for A Pratt.

Our final group game against group leaders Fourmilewater is fixed for the weekend of August 11th but this is obviously dependent on Waterford's progress in the All Ireland series
