Munster Final

Commiserations to our representatives, Paul O Brien, Aidan Kearney and Thomas Ryan , who were part of the Waterford panel and team on Sunday. After the comfort, space and facilities of Pairc Ui Chaoimh we were treated to a great days hurling in Thurles where both favourites came through after varying degrees of scares.

Five Things We Learned From The Weekend

Positives

This year has seen the confirmation of Kevin Moran as an intercounty hurler of the highest class and he will rightly go close to an All Star. Philip Mahony was excellent on Sunday and he should increase our options around the midfield and half back line. Stephen Daniels is delivering on his undoubted potential and along with the solidity of Lawlor and excellence of Connors he makes up a very solid fullback line. Also the form of our confirmed class acts Molumphy, Mullane and Brick held up all year and all three should get All Star nominations.

Drawbacks

People of my generation grew up with Waterford teams that had forward lines containing Flynn, Shanahan, Mc Grath, Kelly and Mullane and scoring prowess and electric forward play was a given. Now we are down to Mullane being heroic in every forward position. This is not to denigrate players like Shane Walsh, Maurice Shanahan and Pauric Mahony (all of whom are decent players) but none of whom can be a multiple scoring threat. Against Cork seven or eight years ago we could dominate for twenty minutes and put 2-6 on the scoreboard. On Sunday we dominated for forty minutes and expended a lot of energy to get into double figures in terms of points.

Aerial Eclipse

On RTE radio after the match Christy O Connor had the almost unbelievable statistic that Cork had won six Waterford puckouts in a row after the sixtieth minute, thus laying the foundations for their late burst. And this was after Waterford had won sixteen puckouts cleanly from the twentieth to the sixtieth minute. Whether it was fitness or the influence of the Cork subs, there's no denying this was where Cork turned on the turbo.

Losing Shape

Limerick went into halftime well pleased with their work. Sure a few goals had gone in but they had broke even around the middle, their forwards were making inroads and they had the wind in the second half. And yet in the second half they fell victim to one of the oldest tricks in the book when playing with the wind as the Kilkenny half forward line led the Limerick half back line out the field and left an ocean of room for Fennelly and Shefflin to make hay in. All it would have taken to stop this was for one Limerick selector to go in to Donal O Grady with a hurley and threaten him with GBH if he crossed the 45 metre line.

Going Low

For Kilkenny's crucial third goal Aidan Fogarty was left in a classic corner forward position, keeper to beat on a narrow angle. He sized it up and struck it down by Nicky Quaid's legs to give him no chance. So many forwards lash it at chest height and people then talk of a wonderful save where a keeper should have no chance of reacting if the ball is placed low
