Tallow 3-12 Dungarvan 0-22

In a game where we were arguably second best for long periods of the game, it was hard not to leave Fraher Field last Sunday thinking we should have gotten at least a share of the points. Especially when the highlights reel would surely be full of some excellent Tallow scores. It’s easy to say that in a game of 16 placed ball scores, that this was won and lost on frees, but that would not tell the full story. With ten minutes left Tallow found themselves 6 points down and playing against a strong wind. But then Thomas Ryan stepped up and scored 3 quick-fire goals to breathe life back into our challenge including one in injury time to draw the game level for a 7th and final time. However it was not to be as Dungarvan sealed their win with the final point of the game.

Playing with a strong breeze Tallow started slightly better and Jordan Henley opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Points were traded until Darah Buckley scored the point of the first half, soloing up the right wing before striking over the bar from the sideline to put us a point up after 11 minutes. Dungarvan equalised and then the game turned into a free taking competition between Waterford stars Thomas Ryan and Patrick Curran, scoring 5pts a piece to leave the game level at 0-8 each after 28 mins. Tallow finished strongly to see out the first half. Firstly Paul O’Brien made a great catch from a Dungarvan puckout, shipped a heavy tackle before laying off a lovely pass to Ryan Grey who dispatched it over the bar to regain the lead. Great to see Paul back playing his first match after a long injury layoff. Tallow’s spirit was now up and some great defensive work saw us win a free out on our half back line. Darah Buckley made a great run to the opposite corner and the ball found it’s way to Jordan Henley, in the full forward line recovering from a heavy knock to put Tallow into a two point lead at halftime 10 points to 8.

The second half started with a missed free from Thomas Ryan that could have opened up a 3 point lead which unfortunately became one of the stories of the second half. In the 33rd minute Tommy made one of his surging runs through the heart of the defence before passing to Ian Beecher who was fouled when a goal looked a possibility. After the resulting free, Dungarvan would outscore us 9 point to 1 over the next 18 minutes. The first where we were lucky not to concede a goal, only for a great save from Shaun O’Sullivan. The management team rang the changes to get the lads going again with Tommy Daly and William Henley coming on. And it was William, playing his first game since 2016, who gave us a lifeline by winning a penalty, which Thomas dispatched to the corner. Tallow 1-12 Dungarvan 0-19. Thomas then again made one of his surging runs and produced a wonderful strike straight off the hurley into the top corner to leave us a point behind. You got the feeling that we were going to produce another comeback and show the resilience that we know this team is capable of. Dungarvan scored the next two points before William Henley fed Thomas on the overlap from the left wing to level up the scores with his third goal. But unfortunately Dungarvan sealed the win with a final point. We had a few chances to level it up that we did not take and will definitely be asking questions as to why we were not awarded a clear free on Thomas at the end to give us a final chance to level.

Overall, this was a spirited showing from a team that has put in a lot of work this year. There will be regrets and recriminations but I think they showed enough for us supporters to be positive about the year ahead. The unfortunate thing now is that after training all year and after playing only one game, championship hurling is being placed back on the shelf for the clubs. Waiting to be dusted off at a date yet to be confirmed.
