Five Things we Learned This Weekend

Another Arrival

It's old news now to herald Joe Canning but we sometimes forget how exciting he was five years ago when he blitzed Diarmuid O Dullivan and Cork in defeat. Yesterday we saw a fit and trim (as he is ever going to get) Canning who was quiet content to chase and graft and pop over easy points with his gorgeous effortless strikes over the shoulder. In this Galway team with its mean defence he doesn't have to head for goal on every opportunity and can drift out at ease and pick his points.

Game Plans

After an FA Cup final in which Chelsea won but bored the pants off every living being, Jose Mourhino revealed afterwards that he had asked his players 'do you want to enjoy the match, or enjoy after the match?' With Galway's stifling gameplan it can't be much fun being a wing forward or midfielder with precious few chances to open your shoulders or break forward but they all seemed to buy into it and now they can enjoy the next week at least and start preparing for an All Ireland.

Championship Matters

Several Galway people have remarked upon the new club championship format that exists in the county this year. There is a modified knockout format in place now (similar to the structure of the Cork championship) which means that the stronger teams can't afford to coast through three-quarters of the year before concentrating on the championship when they get their county players back. You are heavily penalised (though not knocked out) if you lose your first round match and it rewards teams who train from earlier on in the year. Allied to this was the fact that they played club championship rounds in between all intercounty fixtures. It works for Kilkenny and Tipperary too.

Hidden Talent

Are there more hidden gems in Cork club hurling? It's unfair of course to criticise the young players that JBM brought through but it is fair to say that they weren't good enough to make up for the loss of the O Connors and the decline of a few other familiar faces. The current Cork forward line is effective if given space and low ball but surely teams will learn from Galway and deny this to them. That leaves just Pa Cronin as the only man to win the difficult ball. Are ther more of him in Cork?

Formline

Galway's league consisted of beating a Dublin team that we all thought were better than they actually were, a customary shellacking from Kilkenny, and an extraordinary home defeat to a previously confidence-less Waterford. They then conceded four goals to Westmeath and three to Offaly. And now, after two disciplined and controlled performances, they're seventy minutes away from being All Ireland champions. As formlines go it's not exactly linear.
