Senior Hurling Championship : Tallow 1-19 Lismore 5-19.

Having not met in championship hurling for eight years this game was met with a lot of anticipation. The game started off with Lismore pointing a free after forty seconds. They added another a minute later with Jake Beecher receiving a yellow card inside two minutes. Darah Buckley countered this when receiving a hand pass from Robbie Geary and his great long range point landed on the roof of the net from seventy yards. The same man was fouled on the stand side and Tommy pointed a good free. Three minutes gone in the game and it was two scores each. Going on that scoring rate it looked like it would be a high scoring game. Mark O'Brien dispossessed Jack Pendergast , a combination of Bob McCarthy and Kieran Geary worked the ball to Ian Beecher to get a lovely right sided strike on four minutes and we were a point up. A Lismore free levelled it ,followed by a wide by us. Tommy who was fouled around the neck pointed the resulting free on a night were he was nerveless from placed balls . Disaster struck in the eight minute when we conceded a penalty which Maurice Shanahan buried. Ill-discipline in defence was a big factor in our play. Lismore first five scores all came from placed balls and for us to defend coherently as a unit we had to cut out the fouls that was a major handicap in our game all night.

Nearing the water break Tommy again pointed a free but a misplaced pass gave Lismore an easy score where they were punishing any indiscretions . We trailed 0-5 to 1-6 when Lismore were reduced to fifteen men. We entered the water break a man up but three points down and disaster struck on the resumption. A twenty one yard free wasn't blocked and the sliothar cannoned off the hurley and into the net. They added a point and we were seven points down. On the eighteen minute Tommy went on a meandering run and he was half hooked the ball broke and spun in the astro turf in the goal , Paul O'Brien passed to Darah who's ground stroke went wide. Ryan Grey had a fine first half. He won great ball and dealt with different markers whom he caused trouble to all. He wasn't utilised in the second and was starved of possession. He scored a great point on the twentieth minute. With seven minutes to the half time whistle Ian Beecher cut through the Lismore defence but his shot was high and saved. Tommy pointed the resulting sixty five. That put seven points between the teams. Tommy from a Robbie Geary hand pass pointed centrally on the forty five. Jordan hand passed to Ryan on his own sixty five and he pointed a monster shot. Ian Beecher got a hand pass from Paul O'Brien and he put five between the teams as the half time whistle blew.

The second half started with a misplaced pass and Lismore worked a goal opportunity which Jake Beecher blocked with his leg. The sixty five was pointed. A well work ball into Paul O'Brien had him shooting for a point. He seemed to top the strike and the ball went in high into the square . There was a goal line scramble and the ball worked it's way out to Paul again who pulled first time to the roof of the net. A softish free was awarded against us then as the referee who's ego seem to dictate that he talked down to players like they were children instead of grown men. After our goal in which we cut the deficit to three points Lismore scored two frees. We on the other hand had four wides in a row and what momentum we should have had from the goal was gone with our inaccuracy . Tommy pointed a long distance free to stop the rot. A great catch from a Shaun O'Sullivan puck out had Ian Beecher dissect the posts for his third of the game to put us four behind. Good work from Jordan saw him bust out of defence to offload to Tommy Ryan who on the run pointed from sixty five metres.

Kieran Geary was battling away on the wing and had a solid hour.

Tommy pointed another free to leave us a goal behind going into the water break. The fact we never got the score down under three points was a big undoing when the game could have gone either way.

After the last water break we fouled again and Lismore went four clear. Tommy pointed a free two minutes later and it was back to a goal. Lismore goaled after a cross field ball was missed and the subsequent ball was double and it went in in the near post. With that sucker blow another followed as Ian Beecher was dismissed on a second yellow . Tommy pointed his eleventh of the day with a free with eight minutes to go. We did give away another penalty but this time Sully was equal to it and produced a great save low to his right. The sixty five that was struck deceived Shaun and it went in off his hurley under the crossbar. A high ball into the Lismore square saw the ball break out and Mark Stewart off his hurley put it over the bar. Tommy struck a low twenty one free goal wards but the ball was put over the bar. Lismore to add more misery to us got another goal at the end. We need to pick it up big time as we play Ballysaggert on Saturday at 7.30pm in Fraher Field.
