Junior Football Western Final

Tallow 2-6 Affane 1-7

We captured our second Western junior football title in three years last Saturday with an excellent display, especially in our defence, over a quality Affane side. We now qualify to play Kilmacthomas in the county final next Saturday in Walsh Park.

Affane made much the better start with two pointed frees inside the first eight minutes and a few minutes later we had JP to thank when he saved at point blank range to deny Affane the chance to stretch their lead. Gradually we made our way up the field and inevitably it was a well-struck free from Mikey Curley that opened our account. This was followed by an excellent Stuart Barry point and after the first quarter the sides were level. An Affane point was answered by another Michael Curley free and two more Affane points coming towards halftime put them two points to the good at the break, Stephen Pratt's goal on the stroke of halftime being ruled out for a square ball.

A ferocious hail shower at halftime led to a forest of umbrellas being erected on the bank with the result that Stuart Barry's goal a minute into the second half was witnessed by few but it gave us an immediate foothold in the half. Affane responded with a point of their own but Tallow kicked on again with a Michael Curley free, a Mark O Brien point and another superb Mikey Curley point from play left us three points to the good going into the final quarter. With ten minutes left an excellent move involving Stephen Pratt and Michael Curley led to a Kieran Geary goal from close range and we were now in the driving seat. Affane were not for quitting though and we were lucky to escape when they hit the crossbar with seven minutes left. Another Affane point closed the gap before they got a goal from the penalty spot in injury time. However we won possession from the resulting kickout and closed the game out for a deserved victory.

Team: JP Grey, E Hickey, B Henley, K Fraser, T Mc Grath, D O Brien, M O Brien, K Curley, A Pratt, S Pratt, M Curley, K Geary, K Henley, S O Sullivan, S Barry. Subs used R O Sullivan, T Mc Sweeney.

Well done to the management team of Tomas Mc Carthy and Stephen Curley for their work and organisation through the year and we wish the management and team all the best in the county final on Saturday at Walsh Park with a 1:15 throw-in

Senior Hurling County Final

Well done to De La Salle who overpowered Dungarvan in the hurling final on Sunday. The city team's form has been patchy at times, losing to Fourmilewater and struggling to shake off Lismore and Mount Sion but they were at their best on Sunday showing a hunger when they didn't have the ball and a calmness when they did and never allowing Dungarvan any space to use their pace. One would think they should handle whoever comes out of Clare in the Munster semifinal to set up a mouth watering Munster final.
