GAA What Have You Done? For the people that publish new rules each year why alter something that didn't need changing? It's like the rules are fine but you know what let's change it for sake of it

#1 The Advantage Rule: We had the perfect rule where a five second advantage was allowed and if no advantage accrued a foul was awarded from the spot of the original indiscretion . Guess what we will change that and put the referee's in bother and offer nothing in advantage to the offended.

#2 Offensive and Defensive Mark: A free for catching a ball in football. An easy skill but they are trying to make the game like Aussie rules. It adds nothing to the game.

#3 Black Card. I'd have no problem as I think everyone would with a player being black carded for a rugby style drag down but now we could have penalties for mistimed tackles with the hurley or the body in footballs case . Each could be to the right or the left of the large parallelogram but a penalty awarded. I would not agree with this at all. There is an art in how to tackle but a yellow card is nearly given out for every foul.

On The Mend: Good to hear of two of our former chairmen out of hospital recently and recovering.

Cobhrán: CLG Tulach an Iarainn would like to pass on our condolences to Sharon and Kevin Henley and relatives on the passing of Sharon's father John Moloney. Go mbeadh a anam leis na haingil.

The Evolution of our Games: Hurling the most eye catching game is now becoming a bit of eye sore. What have we? A game riddled with frees. Players scoring frees from their own forty five yard lines. Tons of long range points. Short stick passes, short puck outs, hand passes, more hand passes with surely a free thrown in. How do we counteract this ?

First thing is to have a regulated hurley size. A lot players have huge báses now and no matter where they strike the ball with the bás being so big it is nearly always on the sweat spot . So lower the sizes of the bás .The GAA rule book states that 'The bas of a hurley at it's widest point shall be not more than 13cm". Are manufacturers adhering to this? I think not when you see the size of Patrick Horgan's hurley.

The sliothar is way too light. If Ger Cunningham was playing now I'd say he would nearly point a puck out. To point a free on your own 45 should only be possible with a gale of wind behind you. The brilliance of hurling is the skill in the one on one situation. It seems now that players are funnelling back in mass leaving no one up in the forwards. A full forward now seems to watch the majority of the game with the ball sailing over head. Our county champions have being playing this type of game with years. They have perfected it with Phil Mahoney their conductor. I requires vast amounts of fitness levels. Teams though have to play to their strengths and not mimic everyone. Hurling needs to be played hard and fair. Let it flow and don't be blowing for every small indiscretion.
