Senior Hurling Championship

Tallow 0-17, Passage 1-18.

It came and went in the blink of an eye, you might say - i bhfáileadh na súl mar a d'fheárfá. 10 days, 2 games and we find ourselves unceremoniously dumped out of the championship. I suppose we can count ourselves lucky we had a championship.

It might sound defeatist but the reality is the first game against Ballygunner was unwinnable. Sundays game against Passage was a different story, i'm not saying the better team didn't win but from a Tallow perspective, this game was clearly winnable.

News reached us just prior to the throw-in, that two of our most influential forwards Fada and Darah Buckley, were ruled out due to injury. Not the best start, but that is the nature of the game and you just have to get on with it. Passage broke from the blocks and in less than a minute Liam Flynn and Mikie Cummins had them 1-1 up. We would spend the rest of the game chasing that lead. While we reduced it to a point or two, we never succeeded in over hauling it and curiously enough passage's winning margin was 1-1. Three and a half minutes into the game, the eastern team had 1-3 on board whereas Tallow's lone point came from Ian Beecher, his first of four on the day.Ian put in a great shift here. A great man to win dirty ball and offload or shoot. He had his shooting boots on and his tireless enthusiasm was aided by his marksmanship. Thereafter, we settled into the game and Ryan Grey and Tommy Ryan were a constant threat to Passage and picked off some top quality scores. It didn't go unnoticed by the opposition and they were singled out for some close quarter attention. Tommy in particular was repeatedly chopped and fouled and the main transgressor got off lightly in my opinion. That, and some of the cynical gamesmanship we witnessed, the game could well do without.

After a slightly shaky start, our defense' marshalled by Mark O' Brien in centre back got to grips with our eastern opponents. Eoin McGrath in just his second championship outing held his corner well, while Ken in the other corner displayed all his craft, guil and experience. Sully, Jake, Robbie Geary and Jordan completed our defensive line-up which combined to stymie the Passage attack.

Following a disastrous start, Tallow showed an abundance of character to play themselves back into contention and reduce the deficit to 2 point at half time (1-10,0-11).

With energy levels on both sides diminishing, the second half contest was a slow burner. Tommy Ryan who had been through the wars was limping for some time and had to be withdrawn. Ryan Grey, my man of the match on the night, continued to pose a threat but overall we couldn't sustain the necessary pressure to overtake Passage.

Well Done to all involved for their efforts this year.

We recorded our first victory of the campaign against Lismore last Sunday. Trailing at half time we energised in the second half and ended up winning by a nine point margin. Young William Cunningham made his debut at corner back and becomes the first Cunningham since his uncle John to don the Tallow jersey. James Murray experience shows and he excelled in the second half at the heart of our defence. Jake and Kevin did well in midfield while Evan and Mark had good second half's.
