U14 Hurling County Final: Cois Bhríde 3-08 De La Salle 3-10.

Having started the western final at a slow pace we hoped that on this county final day we would not repeat the dose. We did and it probably cost us the result in the end. Fraher Field was looking resplendent, the sun was glistening and it was perfect morning for hurling. In the first five minutes we trailed 1-01 to no score. In the same starting period it's not that we were overpowered by our city opponents, we just seemed to lack a bit of belief in ourselves and it could be said that our accuracy was affected by our apprehension. Conor got us off the mark with our first score of the day from a placed ball. As the first water break approached we were still playing well within ourselves and hadn't got to the pace of game. Stephen Murphy operating at the right half forward was using the ball well and when his high speculative lob in was missed by the De La Salle goal keeper it somehow seemed to bounce outside the postand wide. Billy operating with an injured back was still alert between the post and he still thwarted the De La Salle forwards on a few occasions. Five minutes to go in the half and Jack Henley was on the twenty one and bearing down on goal. With backs hanging out of either side of him his intuition didn't fail him as he managed to wriggle through to bat the ball to the net. Our merriment was short lived as De La Salle responded with a major of themselves and as the half time whistle went we were down 1-03 to 2-07.

A few positional changes helped the team in the second half although De La Salle did goal early in the second half having us ten points down with twenty to go. Twelve year old Keith Martin was brought on in the first half and his reading of the game help steady our defense. Ben Sheehan was in at wing forward using his speed to avail of any opportunity that came his way. Beside him on the forty was Conor who's tireless runs at the De La Salle defense caused umpteen problems to their rearguard. Stephen now positioned at midfield with Joe. They got to grips in that sector and as they did we cut into their lead. Jack was back in the full back line showing us his versality a trait he holds with his brother.

Conor was fouled nearing a quarter of the game left to play. His twenty metre free stuck the back of the net. He added one from play and another free . Our midfield partnership both struck one each from play . We were searching for goals at this stage and Aidan was hauled down inside the thirteen meter line . A penalty awarded. Conor came up to strike the sliothar and to our despair he struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced out. Two minutes later Aidan caught a great high ball and turning to his right he arrowed the ball to the top left hand corner of the net. We were down a goal and with less than four minutes to play . Conor was fouled for what seemed like every time he got on the ball but a twenty one yard free was award to the left of the town goals. We went for goal and it was repelled. Conor having recovered to point his next free had us down to the minimum with time nearly up. De La Salle were unerring with their frees all day and pointed one at the death to stretch their lead to two with time nearly up. They could still afford to miss a free following their pointed effort to seal the victory. There is no question that our young fellas fought to the bitter end. Their gallant effort was in vain but they had the character to fight back and surely that characteristic will stand to them in years to come. There are a good group and represented their club with honor in the U14 grade this year. A western title is their efforts and in the pains of defeat it may seem little when questing for a county medal but they will learn from this and come back stronger we hope in the years to come.
